The Delhi High Court, on Monday (March 24, 2025), issued a circular announcing the withdrawal of all judicial work assigned to Justice Yashwant Varma. This decision follows a controversy surrounding the discovery of a large sum of burnt currency at his official residence. The circular, issued by the Chief Justice, stated:
“In view of recent events, the judicial work from Hon’ble Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma is withdrawn with immediate effect, till further orders.”
Additionally, a note attached to the day’s cause list on the high court’s website clarified that the court master of Division Bench-III, previously presided over by Justice Varma, would now assign dates for pending matters.
The controversy emerged after a fire incident at Justice Varma’s official residence led to the discovery of a significant amount of burnt cash. In response, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, on Saturday (March 22, 2025), constituted a three-member committee of senior judges to investigate the matter. The inquiry panel includes Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge, Justice Anu Sivaraman.
Justice Varma, who is a senior judge in the Delhi High Court and a member of its Collegium, has firmly refuted the allegations, stating that neither he nor his family members ever placed any cash in the storeroom.
