The Government of India has appointed Nidhi Tewari, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2014 batch, as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Previously serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Tewari’s appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and is effective immediately. She will be working at Level 12 of the pay matrix.
A Distinguished Career in Public Service
According to an official notification from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Tewari will serve in this role on a co-terminus basis or until further orders. Her tenure in the PMO began in January 2023 as Deputy Secretary, after initially joining as Under Secretary in 2022.
Who is Nidhi Tewari?
Nidhi Tewari hails from Mehmurganj in Varanasi, which has been Prime Minister Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency since 2014. She secured the 96th rank in the Civil Services Examination in 2013. Before clearing the UPSC exam, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the examination.

Before her tenure at the PMO, Tewari served in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), where she was part of the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. Her expertise in international relations played a crucial role in shaping India’s global policies.

In the PMO, she has been actively involved in the ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, directly reporting to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. She has handled vital areas such as External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs, along with responsibilities concerning the state of Rajasthan. Her contributions were especially significant during India’s G20 presidency.
