In one of India’s most devastating aviation disasters, Air India Flight AI‑171, a Boeing 787‑8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad. The flight, bound for London Gatwick, departed at 1:38 PM IST with 230 passengers and 12 crew aboard.

Radar data shows the aircraft climbed to just 625 feet before losing altitude and crashing into a doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, in the Meghani Nagar area.
A “Mayday” distress call was made moments before communication was lost Witnesses reported a massive explosion and plumes of black smoke.
😢 Casualties & Response
- Authorities have confirmed 204 bodies recovered so far, with DNA testing underway for identification
- All 242 people aboard are believed to have died, marking this the first fatal crash involving a Dreamliner
- At least five people on the ground, including medical students, were also killed, with over 50 injured
- Rescue operations involved multiple fire tenders and ambulances; nearby hospitals were on high alert
